OK I thought I would start the LOTR game based on the Harry Potter game. Here are the rules (that I copied from the HP game thread) Help me out with the characters if I miss any.
Each will start with 15 points and you can vote for them to leave or stay. Here is how, you pick out three characters and either give them a + or - 2 and add or subtract accordingly. When a character gets down to 0, they die and you get to kill them off any grisley way you see fit. The game goes until we have a winner, a sort of this is the most loved character sort of thing. A couple more rules, make sure that you only vote once per day, that you vote for 3 people only and you give them + or - 2. Also, you may want to give reasons why you want to help kill off or bolster a character to make it more fun. Here is the list: Have fun everyone!

Are we voting for the characters as portrayed in the books or the movies?
Also, in my observation of the Harry Potter game, it would have worked a bit better if people were required to have their votes add to zero -- i.e. you must vote two +'s and one -2.

I think it might be better if you could only add points to one person and take away points from the other two. Otherwise we might end up with 10 people with 100 points.

Well, we did it this way last time, and it seemed to work. After a while the favorite characters lost points for the sake of furthering the game and so it all worked out. It's up to you guys though. I thought the way we had it before was fine, but if you want to change it, go ahead.

Well, this one has 28 people on the list, and the other one has 36. So it completely depends on how many people you want on the list.

I vote for take away from 2 and add to 1: ++ Faramir: For being the able to resist the ring and his wonderful speach about how he viewed Gondor --Shelob: Not really a character. Scary, but didn't emotionally affect me. --Saruman: Always felt him kind of wimpy.

It did eventually work out, but I bored of following it long before it did. By forcing people to vote against someone in order to vote for someone else (or visa versa), you are requiring people to make more difficult judgements. I think that would make the game more interesting.

++Rosie Cotton (My favorite character) --Wormtongue (He's a true sniveling weasel) --Denethor (For doing vile things on a very personal level, even if he was off his rocker)
I took the liberty of adding a couple characters from the other list -- I hope I'm not out of line. I think Rosie Cotton is an absolute MUST, but that's only because she's my favorite character.
[EDIT: Evie, you forgot to subtract from Wormtongue, so I did for you. Also, KPPhysicsGeek forgot to subtract from Shelob.]
[EDIT AGAIN: To start Tom Bombadil with 15 points.]

Arwen -- (I can't stand Liv.) Isildur -- (Twit. It's all his fault this happened.) Balrog ++ (He's just misunderstood.)

Thank you for adding characters Jemmy, especially if they were from the other thread... I hope Evie is ok that we use this thread instead of hers.

I've updated the list with a couple missed changes, and the mix of caps and not-caps was driving me nuts, so I made them all the same. I know this isn't my thread -- I'll stop doing things if it bothers anybody. Just let me know.
No, really, I don't mind, as long as people credit me with the fact that I came up with Tom Bombadil, and as long as people realize that I am THE (WO)MAN!

Maybe they'll both win and get married. Then they'll have alot of little Balrosies... little demons of the ancient world with cute curly blond locks.

Oh, . . . the imagery . . .
It occurred to me that it might not be a bad idea to re-post a reminder at the top of each page that we're only to vote once per day. Or does that sound like overkill?
ADDITED: And Evie, you're SO the (wo)man.

I refuse to have Galadriel ranked less than a horse, regardless of what horse that is. And I really never liked Denethor. He was a nut job.

Sam's way to bland. Seriously, all that loyalty crap and all. Not favoriate character material. Don't get me wrong, I like him well enough and he deserves to last a while... but he's such a boring character!

Ryan, I think we're using the subtract from two add to one format for this version, to make it go faster.

I added Prince Imrahil, he should have been in the movie, and it was a travesty that he wasn't. Elrohir and Elladan should have been too, but I'll leave that to someone else to add or leave off.
Edited for recent votes.

Cirdan the Shipwright is my favorite character; is there protocol for adding individuals to the list? <edit incorporated Narnia's prefs> <doubleedit put in Mouth of Sauron and Cirdan>
