I think "he" was the slightly balding old woman who didn't even make it to the final round last week.

This seems a good thread to ask: has anyone seen Icarus around recently? I haven't seen him post in a week or more.

If you want to see me on TV, these episodes will air the week of May 16 to 20. I sat in the third row on the end, and probably appear fairly often behind Meredith Vieira. I'm the guy who looks like Jesus in a black shirt with a red button shirt over it.

Joe -- I've taped the program all this week, but can't see you. Of course, their audience shots really suck because of the blue and red flashy lights that make it impossible to see much of anything other than the hot seat.

But have you watched this week? Are these the right episodes to be looking for you?

UPDATE • UPDATE • UPDATE • UPDATE • UPDATE

Saturday, January 14, we're going to try again.

Cor and I are going to try, and possibly my father--though he is actually *in* the official contestant pool right now, so there is also a possibility that he may know he is going in, and on a different day before the 14th.

Now, as I said a year ago, this is an outside shot, so I wouldn't want anyone to take a day off from work or upheave their life for my sake. But if you have nothing better to do that Saturday . . .

The thing is that if one of us does make it in, our phone-a-friends have to already be standing by. We can't start looking for one then. So chances are whoever helps us will be wasting their time, but you never know, eh?

This year's rules [I'll add to the list as I know more]:

Only five phone numbers. Now we don't know which, if any, of us, will be in the randomly selected pool, but assume that one of those five lifelines will come from offline. That means that we have to narrow it down to four people/clumps on this thread. I have no intention of trying to decide which individuals would be more useful as lifelines, so I'm going to hope that, as with last year, we can get some Hatrackers to get together that day and have multiple brains at one phone number. (And hey, then even if you never get called, you will still have a fun time with fellow Hatrackers!)

Last year we also had fun calling people the night before as tests runs for googling and stuff. [Big Grin]

So, is there any interest in doing this again?

(kwea and JenniK, you guys aren't eligible to be on the show, but you can, of course, be lifelines. Zan and Chris et al, as far as I know you guys are eligible to try this as well . . . )

Noemon, there are several ways to get on the show. The most straightforward one is to travel to New York in the summer and audition. The audition consists of a multiple choice test and, if you pass, an interview. You find out a week or so later whether or not you will move on to the contestant pool, and then you wait in the hopes of being called to the actual show.

Later in the summer, they also travel to major cities and hold the same sort of auditions there. Also, you can go to New York in the fall when they are taping and audition then, though I believe most of their contestants audition in the summer.

You can also come to Disney World on January 14th and try to get randomly selected to be in the pool, and then places in the Hot Seat via interview.

This past summer, Cor, my father, and I all auditioned in New York. We all passed the test and were interviewed. Two weeks later we found out that my father had been selected to be in this year's pool, but Cor and I had not. *shrug* Cor and I then traveled to Miami and auditioned again, and passed the test again. And again we were not selected for the pool. Some of the guys there remembered us, and we believe that the reason we're not getting picked is because my father is in there, and they don't want multiple people from the same family in the pool at the same time. My father, though, has not actually been called yet, and time is running out for him--I think January 14th marks the end of their taping season.

Walk In and Win week (day, really--it's just a week on TV) bypasses the written test, which is not really an issue for us, but I'm hoping it reopens the pool to us, since it's at random. Last year Cor, my father, two friends, and I all tried to get in. Out of the five of us, two were randomly chosen to be in the pool So we feel good about our random chances of getting at least one of us in. If I can get in like I did last year, I feel good about my chances beyond that--except insofar as only nine people out of the whole pool actually made the show last year--because I think I am a very good interviewee.

So that's how you try to get on Millionaire.

Which brings me to: If you sign up to be a lifeline, how will you know when you are no longer needed?

If none of us makes the random drawing, I will immediately call or post. So in that case, you'd know by ten or so? You can look at this thread to see what time of day it was last year when I knew I had made the pool. If one of us does make the pool, last year they said filming would be done by six or so, but it actually ended well past 8 pm, as I recall. I think at least some of my lifelines had stopped standing by by that point. [Dont Know]

I will call or post when it's all over.

But if one of us actually gets into the hot seat, I believe that all of the lifelines are called and told to be on standby. So if it *is* happening, I believe you will know.

Hmmm, anyone from SoCal interested? We'll be in town. Jeff knows animal stuff, tax law, and random sports trivia, I'm pretty good on basic general knowledge and American and English lit and such, but we could use some math brains and advanced science brains in our bunch (although in a pinch, that, as well as stats on every popular rock or R&B record recorded between 1950 and 1969 and several that were recorded after or weren't popular could be supplied by my dad...)

Well, it might be better if your group has a specific strength, so I can base whom I call upon what the question is. If your group is just general, then what would make me choose to call you guys over another group? So it would help to know that here I've got a specialist in this.

Also, it is unlikely that I would be phoning anybody for a math question. [Smile]

Well, obviously. Our main strength as a group would be science/health and "stupid facts that no one in their right mind should know." Between the two of us, my dad and I know far too much of that.

If Jenni and I aren't working we would help again, of course.

My strengths are English (particularly Lit, although more modern than classical..I have read most of the classics, but that was years ago) and general. JenniK's would be Disney, and most things regarding other cultures and Languages, as well as a pretty good general category as well. Anything having to do with deaf culture as well, as her Aunt is deaf.

*laughs* Hey, feel free. I'd get Fahim on the line for that - he knows way way way more than me. Oh, and he's also good for Indian & Sri Lankan history, Islam, and a few languages like Tamil, Sinhalese, Hindi, and Arabic. Um, computer programming, although I don't know specific languages - he uses whatever is the best tool for his purposes at hand, so he tends to use some of this, a little of that, and a bunch of this one, too.

Me? I'm just window dressing. [Big Grin]

I can see what my work schedual will be like, and go from there. If I am able I would be glad to.

My truck just broke down, and is getting repaired now, and I missed work to try and fix it myself (no luck), so I can't take off, although depending on when you need us and what JenniK is working the next day we might be able to help out...adn you would know where to call for us as a lifeline as well. Okay, I need to do a final count . . . I think I have everyone I need, based on people who have contacted me here and elsewhere. Remember, maximum of five (but not all from here, so more like four), and landline phones only.

(I haven't seen fugu around this year . . . *mope* . . . he would be great for economics, among other things.)

Anyway, here's what i could use right now: If you have said you will do this, either at your own number or at a gathering, could you post and tell me what your strengths are? I need some basis for deciding to call you for a given question.

For my own part, I will give some thought to a list of my trivia weaknesses. Off the top of my head, the two most glaring ones are fashion and painting (and art in general, really.) Do I have anybody strong in those categories? Anyway, I'll think more about it later tonight.

I'm staying home from work tomorrow to recuperate from a cold. I'll be playing trivia games galore to warm up, including the Millionaire software, to practice strategy. [Wink] So, last year, we did a couple or three dry runs, where, when I got to a question I would ask for help on, I really did call one of my lifelines at home, and set a timer for thirty seconds, and try to get it answered in time. Anybody feel like playing along tomorrow day or night, just let me know.

I don't think the chatroom thing is viable . . . I think this is what we concluded last year. But since I have a whole day to goof off, if anybody wants to test the theory of relaying a question to the chat room, we could give it a shot.

I could help with most any History question (though, actually who you really want is my history prof who knows, I honestly think, everything there is to know about history)

And while I know a lot of other useless trivia, I almost always get the pop culture questions on that show wrong.

Icky, I'm willing, but it'd just be me.

However, I'm VERY strong in classical music, and ok with most other random trivia, particularly literature and film. I'm no good with math or most science questions. If you want my number (like, if you're desparate to fill out the five landlines thing [Big Grin] ), PM me on sake, and I'll give you my phone number.

Hello Icarus, if you are still looking for lifelines, I would be willing and able to assist you in areas of math and science, and quite possibly, American History, should you not have any lifelines fluent in that category. But I can tell you that I am very advanced in mathematics, and science, especially physics, astronomy, chemistry and biology, though I have a very fluent background in most other sciences as well. My email is batterupcdo@msn.com and I check it multiple times each day, so you can reach me there or at dkatkid22 on AOL Instant Messenger.

Thank you. [Smile] I may need somebody strong in biology. I'm pretty strong in math myself, as a math teacher, so that won't be one of my priorities in shoring up my own weaknesses.

-o-o-

What I need to know, as soon as possible, is this: CT and Pat, are you still in? Are you in as part of a group, i.e., the Utah Clump, or Tom and Christy, or by yourself? (Like, if you're with the Utah Clump, Pat, then I won't count you seperately when seeing how many I have. Make sense?

-o-o-

Also, strengths, people! [Razz]

I'm horrible in biology, fashion design, art (we have someone in Utah who is/was an art teacher/student, though, right? w00t!)

Is anybody really knowledgable about the Zodiac? Like, not just when each sign is (which I do not think I can memorize), but which are Earth/Air/Water/Earth signs (which I actually already know), and what rising and sun signs are (which I don't), and other forms of esotera I cannot predict? (I ask only because I've seen a lot of astrology questions over years of watching the show.)

I'm very strong in literature, but we could always use another strong person in this, since nobody can have read everything. Is anybody strong in non-English-language lit?

Something I mentioned before, but I just want to verify that each person/group is okay with it: My wife and father and some friends are all going to try too. Is it okay if I share you guys with some or all of these people? So you could get a call from some stranger who claims you're his never met friend so-and-so . . . [Big Grin]

I will be posting again in a bit to clarify who I think has told me they're in. Remember, I need contact info. I'll double check how much I need . . . I might possibly need addressed, Lord knows why.

I'm thinking if possible I'd like to gather five lifelines from online, in case all of us who are trying make it in (unlikely: I estimate the probability at around 5% based on last year). Does anybody hate the idea of being an understudy lifeline?

Also, FWIW, I calculate the odds of none of us getting into the pool at somewhere between 20% and 50%, depending on how I calculate it.
