So a friend just introduced me to this pretty cool Galactic Conquest strategy game, and since a large part of success seems to be alliance-building, I think we should get a Hatrack Galactic Council going!
It's free to play. There some annoying popups, so turn your blockers on or use a browser that doesn't let them pop to the front. It has a real-time resource system that limits how much you can play in a day, so you don't have to worry about not being good because you only log on for a few minutes a day. (How much tending your empire actually needs seems to vary as it grows).
If anyone is interested in playing, start a character in Universe 5 (It's the newest, so fewer big established players) and post your info here. Like so:
Name: Enigmatic Planet: Dark Matter Location: 3:64:4
Once we develop space travel we can trade, help each other colonize and conquer and rule the galaxy as father and son! errr... as a bunch of forummates, anyway.

I suspect that because the word "game" is in the domain name it'll be blocked from my place of work. And I was just sitting here thinking that I really ought to conquer the galaxy...

Try building a solar plant, if you hadnt yet. Also try turning off you deuterium/crystal mines inorder to save energy. Try building 2 solar plants off the bat then work on mines.

So . . . it takes 2000 metal to build a metal storage facility, but if you don't have a metal storage facility you can only store up to 1000 metal?

Fugu is right, limits are 100k before building storage.
I've actually started in 2 different universes, 1 my friends are in and 1 for hatrack. For early building you want to focus on solar plant to power your mines and metal mines to supply for later buildings. I didn't bother with a crystal mine right away (like until metal 3 or so), because your initial supply will be enough to build several buildings.
My planet is currently: Metal 4 Crystal 3 Deuterium 1 Solar 5
In about an hour I'll be able to upgrade the deuterium synthesizer, and then will be saving for research lab.

Tip I just found out the hard way: Don't be in any big rush to build the research lab, make sure you have very strong resource production first. The first two things you can choose to research require a LOT of crystal and deuterium.

Mmmm, sweet, delicious Escape Velocity. I liked the Star Wars mod best. There's nothing like flying around your very own star destroyer.

Confession, for the enjoyment of fellow EV lovers: I had to resist the urge to name myself Stud Beefpile or Rick Hardslab for this new game.
Every few years I dust of one incarnation of EV or another (the original or Nova, usually) and play some more.

It'll be a while, since we can't do that until we can communicate in-game, and we won't be able to do that until everyone has spaceflight capability, I think...

On my metal mine, it has says under energy red 24/24. Does that mean it needs more energy for more metal, or what?

Nope, it just means that it uses 24 energy units. Your energy income (e.g. from a solar plant) is in green further down.

I believe so, but have not yet had the resources to test out that theory. It seems that research takes so much deuterium, and deuterium takes so much energy, that you may be better off getting a flow of around 200/hour on metal and crystals before putting much into deuterium. That way you can afford the massive solar plant upgrades you need to support a good-sized deuterium mine.
I'd rushed into getting deuterium and a research plant on my first planet (other universe) and it's been sitting there for hours, not doing anything becauses I don't have the resources to research anything. (see earlier post)

Edit: Or just build your deut synth as the last thing before you're done building for the day, so you get a slow trickle going overnight.

I built up my powerplant and metal mine, so now I'm just waiting an hour for my metal to come in so I can spend it on a level 3 metal mine. Then I'm broke on just about everything. Any sugjestions on what I should build instead?

I didn't pay attention, build one (each) of the first four, then another mine. Now I've got power problems, which I'm temporarily handling by shutting down the crystal mine and deuterium synthesizer. Waiting for metal to build up so I can upgrade the solar plant. Oh, well, I can do other stuff while that's going on.

Mine's underway! Sleeping is way better than waiting for your metal and deuterium to add up. And I have 2 points.

How do you get points? Also, I have pretty good resources now, should my next project be a robot factory or a research lab? I want to get a shipyard built (which you need robots for)so I can build a fleet, but should I have decent research first?

I don't know exactly how the points work. It seems you get them for reaching certain levels in various buildings, but I've had points show up quite a while after I'd built anything. There may be a delay in calculating the score, to make it less transparent.
I would recommend research lab before robot factory. There's a lot of research that you need to do before you can build anything with your shipyard. You'll need both eventually, obviously. The advantage of building the robots first would be that things take less time to build. For me at least, I'm waiting on resources more than I'm waiting on build time. (except first thing in the morning when there's a stockpile, of course.)

you get one point for every 1000 units of resouces you have built up. Resources are counted at certain increments throughout the day. You only lose them if things like spaceships get destroyed.
Twink, how do you get rid of waste?

By upgrading your mines/synthesizer until you're using as much of your available energy as possible.

Does anyone else have an account on universe 4? I started one on universe 4 because Shigosei is playing on universe 5 and I don't want to risk either of our accounts being banned for multiplaying. On universe 4, I am:

I also have a highly efficient resource collection structure. Although not quite as efficient -- I'm running at 2 energy waste right now.
